Success Story of the Month

> more

This is Shadow who is eight months old and this is Deby who broke her leg on December 30th. We got Shadow when he was just four months old. The very next day after we brought him home, both myself and my husband Mike, were able to pet him. Within two months I could pet/scratch him all over, pick up his feet, halter him and lead him out of his round pen for various “field trips” around our property.

When I broke my right leg I was told I could not walk on it for three months. I was heartbroken because I had been working with Shadow for about fifteen minutes a day. When I wasn’t able to work with him I would at least pet and feed him daily. I was so afraid he would forget me and all that we had learned.

However, as you can see from the photos taken on February 20th, he hasn’t forgotten a thing! Not only can I halter him sitting down, but when I stand on one leg outside the fence he comes over and stands still until I have his halter on him.

Shadow is so easy to work with and doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything. When my husband drives the ATV into the round pen, Shadow’s ear go up and then he looks at the ATV as if to say, “Oh no big deal, it’s just another human toy to check out”. He then wanders over to sniff and chew this new experience.

I imagined a mustang to be wild, untouchable and difficult to work with. However, my experience has been totally the opposite. Being a novice with horses I worked slowly with good results. Those of you like my husband, who have years of experience with horses, probably could have accomplished what I did in just a few weeks.

Shadow is so much fun and very loving. He is such an incredible horse that we plan to adopt another mustang in the future. Thanks Flora & Franz for allowing us to adopt Shadow and for me to experience this loving bond between human and horse.
